What 900 users & 76 companies have taught us about building better software…

At gpm, we’ve been building software for the London insurance market for over 30 years. We’re currently working closely with 76 insurance intermediaries, of which 48 are Lloyd’s brokers. That’s more than 900 users.

We’ve seen how the market has evolved, how teams work, where the friction lies and what really makes a difference to brokers and technicians.

Here are five key things we’ve learned along the way – insights that continue to shape everything we do.

    1. Everyone uses the software differently – and that’s a strength!
From Lloyd’s brokers to niche intermediaries, no two customers use the system in exactly the same way. That’s why configurability matters. What works for one team might not suit another, so we’ve built flexibility in from the ground up.
    2. Speed of implementation can be a game changer
One client was up and running in just 30 days. Others took a more phased approach. But the lesson is: when the system fits the process (not the other way round), you can move faster and start seeing results sooner.
    3. Reporting isn’t a ‘nice to have’ – it’s critical
Across almost every feedback session or client meeting, brokers tell us the same thing: “If I can’t see my pipeline and performance, I can’t grow.” That’s why reporting, via inFOCUS INSIGHT, is no longer optional – it’s essential to business growth.
    4. Admin frustration causes more friction than we realised
Whether it’s Word docs saved locally, re-keying the same data multiple times, or not knowing what template to use – users want the friction gone. All these small inefficiencies add up, and they’re a bigger barrier to productivity than most businesses think.
    5. Our clients want to shape what comes next
Some of our best ideas haven’t come from inside the building – they’ve come from brokers, technicians and operations teams telling us what’s missing, what’s clunky, and what could be better. The more we listen, the stronger our roadmap becomes.

As much as we pride ourselves on great software, it’s the conversations, feedback, and relationships that really impacts our progress.
